Heavy rain pounded a North Korean town bordering China on Saturday, submerging a number of houses and large farmland, a Pyongyang report said.
The report by the Korean Central News Agency said rescue efforts were under way but did not mention if there were any human casualties.
Between midnight and 9 a.m. Saturday, more than 300 millimeters of rain fell around the Suphung Lake down the Amnok River, which marks the border with China, it said. The swollen river overflowed with flash floods from China's northeastern region, it added.
"Houses, public buildings and farmland were submerged 100 percent" in several villages in Sinuiju, a town on the North Korean side of the border, the report said.
"Officials and people of North Phyongan Province, including those of the city (Sinuiju), and servicepersons have turned out in rescue work," the report said.
