The Techiman Municipal Assembly has handed over 10-hectre land and a four-classroom block with offices and an ICT centre to the authorities of the University of Education, Winneba, for its distance learning programme.
This brings to three, in addition to those at Bechem and Attebubu, the number of study centres in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
The Techiman Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Alex Kofi Kyeremeh, said the facility had brought higher education closer to the people especially teachers to improve their skills and competencies without leaving the classrooms for a number of years.
Mr Kyeremeh called on management of the University to ensure that qualified instructors are enrolled to enable them offer their best and also urged participants on the other side to eschew apathy and laziness.
He used the occasion and appealed to authorities of the University to upgrade the centre in future as a full fledged campus of the University.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, said the move was an opportunity for the University to locate closer to its clients.
He appealed to teachers who work in the Techiman Municipality and its environs to take advantage of the facility to access higher education.
The Bamuhene of the Techiman Traditional Area Nana, Ofosu Gyabour Appinteng, promised to release more land for the expansion of the study centre to a full campus.
He thanked management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) for bringing higher education closer to the door steps of the people of Techiman and its environs.
