A 24-year-old drinking bar operator, who bought a quantity of cannabis to heal his hernia was on Monday sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.
Andrew Yaw Oboafo, pleaded not guilty to the charge of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
The court presided over by Mr E.K. Baffuor however found Oboafo guilty after the trial and convicted him accordingly.
The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Cletus Abandamlora told the court that at about 1300 hours on May 5, personnel of the Highway Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service stopped an Accra-Ho bound bus for a snap check.
During the search, the prosecutor said the police personnel discovered a parcel of dried leaves concealed in a black polythene bag on Oboafo.
ASP Abandamlora said when Oboafo was quizzed, he claimed ownership of the drugs suspected to be cannabis sativa and was escorted to the Narcotics Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department.
The prosecutor said Oboafo told the Police that he bought the drugs for his personal use and for the treatment of his hernia.
According to the prosecutor, Oboafo said he bought the drugs from a young man at Jasikan at the cost of GH� 10.00 cedis.
The prosecutor said the convict, however failed to lead the police to his alleged supplier.
ASP Abandamlora said the exhibit was sealed and forwarded to the Police Forensic Laboratory for examination.
