Vice President John Dramani Mahama said at the
weekend that government has drawn up a comprehensive plan, to equip educational institutions with the necessary logistics and human resources for them to perform creditably.
He said some of the interventions include the provision of infrastructural development and computers for the various Information,
Communication and Technology Centres.
"I am aware of the accommodation problems most Senior High Schools faced this academic year as a result of increasing the educational system from three to four years, but I can assure you that government will accelerate the provision of more infrastructural facilities to make both students and staff comfortable in school."
Vice President Mahama announced this during the 50th Anniversary celebration of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale.
GHANASCO which was established in 1960, is the third oldest school in the Northern Region, apart from Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO) founded 1951 and St Charles Senior High School, a Catholic private School in 1953.
The Vice President Mahama and his wife, Lordina Mahama are both old students of the school which is also the second largest school with more than 2,000 students apart from TAMASCO in the Northern Region.
Vice President Mahama commended GHANASCO for training students who are now occupying important positions in the country and called on the past
students to keep in touch with their alma mater by contributing in cash and other necessary materials towards the growth and maintenance of the school.
He promised that government would liaise with the Ghana Education Trust Fund and other organisations to provide additional infrastructure to GHANASCO and other schools that lack adequate office and residential
accommodation.
The Vice President said the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority Act 805 had been passed to bridge the yawning gap between the North and South and called on Northerners to take advantage of the programme, to partner government to create more jobs for the teeming youth of the country.
He also promised to source funds for the school to build a permanent fence wall to ward off encroachers on the land of the academic facility.
Professor Haruna Yakubu, Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies appealed to the Guidance and Counselling Units of the schools to intensify their educational programmes on various courses and programmes so that students would be adequately equipped for tertiary education.
Mrs Mary Asobayire Dani Braimah, Headmistress, appealed to the government to complete all the abandoned infrastructure of the school to adequately accommodate both students and staff.
