The Brong Ahafo Regional Secretariat of the National Commission on Women and Development (NCWD), has organised a day's sensitisation workshop on the need for women to seek early treatment for cervical and breast cancer.
Madam Salamatu Ibrahim, Nkoranza South District Director of Health Services who addressed the about 100 participants urged women to undergo frequent screening for the early detection of the disease.
She explained that both males and females were at risk of contracting breast and cervix cancer.
Madam Ibrahim mentioned the skin, lip, tongue, uterus, the penis and the prostate gland as other parts of the body that could suffer from cancer, which she said could easily damage the body.
She advised against the use of herbal concoctions and seeking of treatment at shrines and other superstitious practices for the
treatment of cancer, saying the practice is harmful.
"Such ideas cause people to refuse to go to hospital for treatment and in the end lose their lives," she said.
Madam Ibrahim emphasised that breast cancer and related diseases are curable and called on stakeholders to educate the people on the need to seek medical attention.
Madam Malonin Asibi, Acting Regional Director of NCWD advised cancer patients to visit medical centres for counselling about their health problems in order to live long.
The District Deputy Co-ordinating Director, Madam Fati Saaka, expressed gratitude to the organisers of the workshop and called on the participants to go back to their communities and educate the people about the disease.
