The Police at the weekend arrested Ernest Nyarko, 39, and Evans Ofori Asante, 27, for their alleged involvement in the theft of a quantity of ammonia sulphate from a warehouse at the Takoradi Port.
Speaking at a press conference at Sekondi on Tuesday, Alhaji Hamidu Mahama, the Western Regional Police Commander, said the suspects were
believed to be members of a gang that had been stealing from warehouses.
He said a security agency gave the Police a tip-off that the gang intended to carry out an "operation" at warehouses at the Port on November
20 this year.
Alhaji Mahama said the gang promised the Police Panther Unit 35,000 Ghana Cedis if it assisted them to carry out a successful operation.
He said the Police and other security agencies, therefore, mounted surveillance at the Port.
Alhaji Mahama said Nyarko went to the Port with a truck and a forklift and used the forklift to load the truck with ammonia sulphate from a
warehouse.
He said he was about to load a second truck when the forklift broke down and was arrested by the Police.
Alhaji Mahama said the following day, as he was passing by the Takoradi Jubilee Grounds, when he saw large restless crowd.
When he went there to find out "what was happening he was told that Asante had been sleeping there for two nights and they were suspicious of his movements, he said.
Alhaji Mahama said Asante, whose his motorbike was parked nearby,when questioned, said he came to Takoradi to do business and was sleeping at the grounds because he had nowhere to sleep.
He said he arrested Asante and during interrogation at the Police Station, it came out that he was involved in the theft at the warehouse.
