The impasse between tutors of the Ghana National College and the Headmaster of the school, Mr Robert Koomson Barnes, deepened on Tuesday as the tutors had laid down their tools to further
register their displeasure.
A visit to the school on Wednesday morning by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) saw many of the students loitering around, while the aggrieved tutors wore red wrist bands gathered in the staff common room.
A tutor and Head of the School's Science Department, Mr Kwadwo Ateko, told the GNA that sometime this year, they called for the removal of Mr Koomson Barnes because of what they termed as his autocratic administration.
He said a committee was set up to investigate the allegations and the Ghana Education Service (GES) asked Mr Barnes to proceed on leave while the Metro Director of Education, Mr Samuel Obotan Larbi was asked to act.
He said the teachers were aggrieved by the fact that the headmaster was still signing coupons for fuel and allocation for food items and that he was indirectly controlling the affairs of the school.
Mr Ateko said they had earlier made their grievances known to the Metro Director of Education and followed it up with a letter on Tuesday, November 23, calling for the signatures to be changed.
He said even though the Metropolitan Director of GES had interacted with them, their grievances had still not been met, saying they had not been treated fairly and that until the headmaster stopped signing for the release
of fuel and food, the teachers would remain on strike.
Meanwhile, a source close to the school alleged that the Metropolitan and Regional Directors are condoning and conniving with the headmaster.
Attempts to contact the Metro and Regional Directors of GES were however unsuccessful.
