While Scotland is taking the lead in green energy technology, education can help citizens realize the benefits of lower emissions, the government said.
Edinburgh said it was advancing a public engagement strategy that would focus on ways to communicate how Scotland will transition to a low-carbon society.
Roseanna Cunningham, the Scottish minister for the environment, said education is a key part of making sure her country realizes the long-term benefits of green energy.
"We have set out clearly why a low carbon economic strategy is right for Scotland," she said in a statement.
Scotland in 2009 relied on renewable energy to meet 27 percent of its electricity needs. The renewable energy sector as a whole made up 43 percent of the total renewable energy output in the United Kingdom during the same period.
"(W)e all know that to make major changes more needs to be done and every part of society has a part to play," added Cunningham. "We need to communicate this message clearly and how many of the individual actions we take can be a personal benefit as well as reducing our carbon emissions."
