A Florida woman whose resolution for 2011 was to look good died after undergoing liposuction to remove fat from her waist, her husband said.
Osvaldo Vargas said his wife, Lidvian Zelaya, went to Strax Rejuvenation Center in Lauderhill to have fat liposuctioned from her waist and added to her buttocks, The Miami Herald reported.
Three hours after Monday's procedure started, Zelaya was taken to a nearby medical center. Vargas said when he arrived he was told his wife had died.
``She was beautiful, always happy, always dancing. I want to know what happened,'' Vargas said Thursday at a news conference.
Vargas' attorney, Spencer Aronfeld, said it wasn't known what doctor performed the liposuction procedure, or whether it had been started when medical problems began.
"We're not accusing, we're seeking information," Aronfeld said. "We've asked the Broward medical examiner for an autopsy, and we're awaiting its outcome."
The autopsy was being performed at the Broward County Medical Examiner's office, which said it was awaiting more information about the surgery and for results from toxicology tests.
An attorney for Strax said federal privacy laws prevent him from discussing the incident.
"I'm waiting for the medical examiner's report," said Strax attorney Phillip Feanny.
Vargas said the couple saved the money for the $4,500 procedure and planned a vacation following the surgery. He said his wife appeared to be in perfect health and that she didn't take drugs.
