Jordan's King Abdullah, speaking by telephone with Israel's prime minister, called for Mideast peace talks to resume immediately, officials said.
Abdullah, in a conversation with Binyamin Netanyahu Wednesday, advised against "wasting more time" and said serious and effective talks should resume as soon as possible between Israel and the
Palestinians, The Jordan Times reported.
Negotiations must lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state that will live in peace and security side-by-side with Israel, the newspaper quoted the king as saying.
Commitments toward peace must be translated into action, with a two-state solution being the sole path to regional security and stability, the Jordanian monarch said.
In a related move, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh was to meet with Palestinian leaders Thursday to discuss ways of resuming the peace talks, Jordan's Petra news agency said.
Netanyahu was to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Thursday to discuss the breakdown in negotiations and steps needed to revive the peace process.
