Teachers teaching in schools along the 20-kilometre Tinkong-Amanfrom feeder road in the Akuapem North District have appealed the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to provide them with a welfare bus.
Due to the poor nature of the road, only few taxis ply the road and as a result many teachers have to walk for long distances to other communities to get vehicles back home after school.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency on Thursday on behalf of the teachers Ms Beatrice Ntow of Asempaneye District Assembly Primary School said there are 10 schools along the road.
She said since many of them could not get accommodation in the communities where they teach they were forced to stay either at Tinkong or Amanfrom and commute to school daily.
Ms Ntow said in the mornings it was easy to get taxis from either Tinkong or Amanfrom to school but after classes the taxis would not be around and the teachers had to walk.
Ms Ntow said on “lucky days” she and other female teachers would get a ride on tipper trucks that come to win sand at the Asempaneye area back to Tinkong to continue their journey back home.
She therefore appealed to GNAT to provide a welfare bus to transport the teachers in the area to and from school.
