The Deputy Western Regional Minister, Ms Betty Bosomtwi-Sam, has charged nurses and midwives in the country to remain committed to the oath they swear before being enrolled into the profession.
She noted that some people entered the nursing profession because of monetary consideration and were therefore not committed to the work.
Ms Bosomtwi-Sam said some nurses showed gross disrespect towards their patients, adding that she had received several of such complaints from the general public.
Ms Betty Bosomtwi-Sam said this at the sixth Matriculation ceremony of the Sekondi Nursing and Midwifery College at Sekondi over the weekend.
She urged the fresh students to remain committed to the oaths they had taken to serve the populace.
“The profession you have chosen deals with all aspects of human life and needs patience, love and kindness. You must comfort your patients at all times”, she said.
On his part, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Director of Education, Nana Kofi Adjie Mbeah, urged students in the region to attain the necessary grades to qualify them for courses such as nursing and midwifery.
He said enrolment statistics available to the directorate indicated that there was a low percentage of students from the region pursuing courses in nursing and midwifery, a situation he described as worrying.
Nana Mbeah said his outfit would soon embark on a sensitization tour of the 13 senior high schools in the region to encourage and motivate students to pursue courses in nursing and midwifery.
He also urged male students to pursue courses in nursing and midwifery, saying that those courses were not only the preserve of females.
