Prof. Kofi Awoonor, Chairman of the Council of State, on Tuesday called on heads of senior high schools to establish good library systems in their schools to promote effective learning.
He said the library served as a convenient place for students to acquire basic knowledge and therefore should always be made available to them.
Prof. Awoornor made the call in Accra when the Council of State donated education material to the Kaneshie Senior High Technical School and Salvation Army Senior High School, Akim Wenchi.
The items included Science, Maths, English Language and Literature textbooks, exercise books, pens, pencils and erasers.
He said the Council was geared towards improving the country’s education system by addressing all issues relating to education from the lower level to the highest level, adding that the donation would help them to achieve their target.
Prof. Awoornor noted that reading was the cornerstone of the creation of knowledge and if it was encouraged it would create a firm foundation for the country to develop in all areas.
“Knowledge is universal and so should be made available to all irrespective of the socio–economic background of the people,” he said.
Mr Eric Amarh, Headmaster of Kaneshie Senior High Technical School, receiving the items on behalf of the school, expressed gratitude to the Council, and called on students to imbibe the habit of reading to enhance their level of knowledge.
Mr Sampson Afrifa, Headmaster of Salvation Army Senior High School, thanked the Council for its kind gesture and pleaded with members to help improve the infrastructure in the school.
