Afghan and NATO-led forces during a cleanup operation dismantled a Taliban stronghold in Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province, 250 km north of capital Kabul, district governor said Thursday.
"Afghan and international forces during a joint operation destroyed Taliban stronghold in Qalbad village and cleared out 20 villages from Taliban insurgents on Wednesday in Imam Sahib district," Mohammad Ayub Haqyar told Xinhua.
Without giving an exact number, Haqyar added that security forces inflicted huge casualties to the militants during the operation.
According to Haqyar, over 130 militants have surrendered to authorities in Imam Sahib district bordering Tajikistan over the past two months.
Taliban militants, fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops in Afghanistan, have yet to make comments.
Afghan security forces backed by NATO-led troops have been mounting pressure on Taliban fighters in Kunduz and the neighboring Baghlan and Takhar provinces over the six months.
