A 27-year-old driver, Kwadwo Agbeyenfia Godsway who attempted to defile a 12-year-old pupil at Tunga-Dansoman was on Monday sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Accra.
Godsway was said to have invited the victim into a corner and used his manhood to brush the victim’s vagina. Soon after the act, the convict gave the victim a siemens mobile phone.
Charged with attempt to commit crime, to wit defilement, Godsway pleaded guilty before the court presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa.
When the court asked whether or not he had something to say, Godsway said “I beg you, please have mercy on me”.
The court pointed out to Godsway who is married, that the charge levelled against him carried the same punishment as the offence itself (defilement).
“If you don’t have a wife you should not go for somebody’s child and defile her. Next time if you want to have sex look for an adult and if she give in then you can have sex with her but if she declines, then, that also amounts to rape,” the trial judge said.
The case of Police Inspector I.A.A. Ahor, the prosecutor, was that the victim lived with her guardian at Tunga-Dansoman, Accra.
Godsway, a commercial driver also lived in the same vicinity.
The prosecutor said the convict during his leisure time rests under a tree near the victim’s school.
He said sometime in January this year, the victim closed from school and saw the convict at Islamic School Park who invited her into a nearby corner and used his manhood to brush the victim’s vagina.
The prosecutor said after the act, the convict offered the victim a mobile phone and the victim kept the ordeal to herself.
Inspector Ahor said when the victim sent the mobile phone to school, she was quizzed by her teachers and she narrated the incident to them.
The prosecutor said the school authorities informed victim’s guardian about the incident.
Inspector Ahor said when the convict visited the school with the intention of collecting the mobile phone, he was arrested and handed over to the Police at Dansoman who referred the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU).
The Police issued a medical form to the victim and after she was examined, the convict was charged.
In a related development, the court has granted bail in the tune of GH¢8,000 with a surety to Michael Nortey, a driver for indecent assault.
Nortey was said to have inserted his fingers into the vagina of a three-year-old girl on December 20, last year at Teshie, an Accra suburb.
He denied the offence and would re-appear on February 21.
