Mohammed Abbas, the 31-year-old articulator truck driver who ran over some school children at Kwesimintim has been granted bail by a Takoradi Circuit Court in the sum of GHC20, 00 with three sureties to re-appear on February 28.
His lawyer, Mr. Kofi Diaba, asked for a bail last week but could not be granted on the grounds that the safety of the accused could not be guaranteed.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Albert Deletsa told the court presided over by Mr. Charles Nimako that the accused could now be granted bail because further investigation had proved that he would be safe.
However, the charge sheet has been changed due to the death of Ms Melissa Donkor and this brings to three the number of children who died in the accident.
He said the charges of careless driving and inconsiderate driving as well as negligently causing harm were still valid and that the court was still waiting on the Attorney General’s Office for advice.
