The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has engaged residents of Legon village as part of the Commission’s outreach campaigns to educate the public on its activities.
Ms Nana Yaa Jantuah, Public Relations and External Affairs Manager of PURC, told residents that the organization was set up to protect the interest of consumers as well as the utility service providers.
She said as an impartial entity, the Commission acts on complaints of consumers, especially in relation to the provision of poor service to consumers.
However, the complaints must first be directed to the utility provider concerned.
Nana Yaa Jantuah said if the utility provider failed to resolve the problem, it was then that the consumers could seek redress from the Commission.
She said apart from approving tariffs for utility providers and receiving complaints from consumers, the PURC also monitored the operations of the providers and ensured that it would provide quality services to consumers.
Nana Jantuah said to ease the problem of consumers from huge leaps in tariff, the Commission had introduced the Automatic Adjustment Formula to review tariffs quarterly, taking into account variables such as the generation mix, cost of fuel and the exchange rate.
She asked the consumers to cultivate the habit of documenting outages and interruption in supply of services as it could become useful when a claim for a damaged item was being made.
Nana Jantuah expressed the hope that the education campaign would go a long way to empower consumers to know their rights and responsibilities.
