The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Samuel Sarpong, has called on Ghanaians to keep their environment clean, to prevent the spread of cholera in some parts of the country.
He asked the people to adhere to good sanitary practices and to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Mr Sarpong gave the advice when he joined residents of Asokwa New Town in Kumasi to clean the community.
The people removed silt and polythene bags from gutters, cleared weeds and swept the streets.
The MCE cautioned the residents against complacency because the Metropolis had not yet recorded any incidence of cholera.
Mr Sarpong said the Metropolitan Assembly had stepped up public education on the causes and prevention of cholera and other diseases like malaria and typhoid fever.
He said the assembly was also working hard to ensure efficient management of waste in the metropolis.
Mr John Obimpeh, Assembly Member for Asokwa New Town, warned that anyone found dumping waste at unapproved places would be arrested and prosecuted.
He praised thanked the assembly for improving the street lighting system of the area.
