An unemployed, who stabbed a driver with a broken bottle and stole his mobile phone and money on the road to the Institute of Professional Studies in Accra, was on Tuesday sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Accra Fast Track High Court.
Emmanuel Awuah pleaded not guilty to the charges of robbery and causing harm but the court found him guilty and convicted him accordingly.
According to the court, it was established that Awuah committed harm to the complainant and it was through that harm that he managed to overcome him (complainant) and took away his money and mobile phone.
It said Awuah had no justification to cause that harm to the complainant.
The case of the prosecution was that on March 14, 2010, the complainant parked his taxi cab at a nearby bush near the Institute of
Professional Studies in Accra and went to a popular spot known at “Free Range,” to ease himself.
Suddenly Awuah, who emerged from the bush, pulled out a broken bottle and demanded the money and mobile phone from the complainant.
When the complainant resisted, Awuah stabbed him with broken bottle in the face. The complainant shouted for help and together with other witnesses Awuah was apprehended and escorted to the Madina Police Station.
During police interrogation Awuah admitted robbing and causing harm to the complainant.
