The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Friday commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene for honouring teachers in deprived communities in the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Eastern and the Volta Regions.
A statement signed by Mrs Irene Duncan-Adanusa, General-Secretary of GNAT in Accra said: “Even though the National Awards were magnificent to GNAT, it is the spirit behind the awards that excites us. The sensational and kindly handshake you gave to each of the 200 awardees is very inspirational.
“It is not every day that ordinary people have the opportunity to shake hands with the Asantehene. Otumfuo by your royal move, many teachers would be motivated and inspired to accept postings to
difficult areas where their services are most needed.”
The statement said: “Again by your kind gesture, hopefully, many other public-spirited persons and institutions would follow your
shinning example and thereby the much needed accelerated development and expansion of education in Ghana can be realised.”
The Asantehene presented GH¢50,000 to the 200 selected teachers and non-teaching staff at the basic level in the four regions at the Teachers Award Day, organised by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation in Kumasi.
The presentation was to motivate the hard working teachers and non-teaching staff to continue with their good work for the benefit of mother Ghana.
In addition to the money, the beneficiaries received certificates, unspecified amounts of money, mosquito nets, solar lamps, Wellington boots, cutlasses and wall clocks with an embossed
portrait of the Asantehene.
