Latter Day Saints Charities have donated resuscitation equipment to health facilities in the Volta Region.
The equipment worth 35,000 dollars, included 400 paediatric stethoscopes, 400 infant resuscitators, 800 bulk syringes, 350 machines to
help babies breathe, and action plan posters for delivery rooms.
The donation was to help reduce neonatal mortality rate in the Region by at least 50 per cent by 2015.
Mr. Isaac Ferguson, West Africa Programme Coordinator of Later Day Saint Charities, presented the equipment at the end of a two-day neonatal workshop for midwives organized by the group in Ho on Friday.
He said Latter Day Saints Charities have trained more than 1,000 midwives in the country since 2003.
Dr. Timothy Letsa, Volta Regional Director of Ghana Health Services, said neonatal resuscitation was a “very high impact cost effective intervention” and commended the donors for their gesture.
He noted that most neonatal deaths were related to care at the time of birth, and said the equipment would be used to prevent such deaths.
Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, thanked Latter Day Saints Charities for the donation and charged participants to put skills
acquired at the event to good use.
He advised the midwives to take proper care of the equipment.
Mr Amenowode said Government would continue to provide the necessary human and material resources to enable healthcare personnel provide quality and affordable services to the citizenry.
