In an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer and help reduce the myths surrounding the disease, Mobile network operator- Tigo last week organized breast cancer education and screening exercise for staff under the name “save the breast”.
The event was held in conjunction with the Peace and love hospital in Kumasi and Breast Care International.
Speaking in Accra, Tuffour Mensa- Bonsu Tigo’ s CSR coordinator, said that Tigo’s Corporate Social interventions should not only be directed at the communities in which it operates but also extended to its employees who’s handwork ensures the company’s survival. It is in this direction that this important campaign was rightly extended to Tigo people
The education and screening exercise took place at the Barnes road flagship building of the mobile network operator.
During the educational road shows Dr. Mrs. Wiafe leader of the Peace and Love team took the opportunity to educate employees on how to prevent the disease and conduct personal examinations.
She also took the opportunity to answer questions about the disease and most importantly demystified some myths about the disease. In all about 78 female employees were screened and cleared during the exercise.
In line with Tigo’s support for the Breast cancer awareness campaign, he said that Tigo will partner the ‘Susan G. Komen Race for Cure’ campaign, Peace and Love hospital and other stakeholders to embark on a health walk to raise awareness about the disease and raise funds for further research into the disease and creation of an electronic database to record infrastructure parameters on breast cancer nation- wide.
The walk will be held in Kumasi on the 25th of may 2011. Asantehene will be the guest of honor for the event.
