The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), on Thursday, October 20, 2016, held a forum at the Executive Hall to launch the 2016 mentorship programme. The mentorship programme which is a collaborative effort of the UGBS Alumni Association and UGBS, is meant to offer selected students practical experience and the opportunity to be coached on their career choices.
In a welcome address, Professor Richard Boateng, welcomed the Alumni Association to the forum and thanked them for their initiative. ‘In spite of your busy schedules you have accepted the arduous task of grooming up the younger generation of students from UGBS, this is a mark of your commitment to the school’ Professor Boateng said. He added that, the engagement of the Alumni Association in the mentorship programme captures the spirit of giving back to their Alma Mata.
In a short message, Mrs. Frances Adu-Mante, a Legal Consultant and Vice-Chairperson of UGBS Endowment Fund Board of Trustees, acknowledged the contributions and corporation of UGBS in organising the mentorship programme. She said the mentorship programme is meant to encourage networking of students and alumni. She urged the mentors to use the networking to nurture the mentees because they look up to them as their role models.
Dr. Kobby Mensah, a lecturer at UGBS, lauded the organisers of the mentorship programme and said the school is working diligently to achieve great status among its peers worldwide to create a stronger brand. He encouraged UGBS Alumni to come up with initiatives that are beneficial and will help uplift the image of the school.
On his part, Mr. Samson Asimeng, Deputy Managing Director of GECAD Group of Companies and President of UGBS Alumni Association, encouraged mentors to be committed to giving out their best to ensure that UGBS produces the best of employable graduates for leadership, entrepreneurship and the job market. He also urged them to show a high moral standard and discipline such that the mentorship programme can be sustain.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. David Okyere Nyarko, Director of Finance at The Royal Bank and president of UGBS Alumni 1993 Year Group, charged the selected mentees and mentors to attach seriousness to the programme. He said the knowledge mentees will acquire from the mentorship programme is unquantifiable and will help shape their future career choices.
