The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has established organisational linkage with the Zongo Magajia Association in Accra to serve as educational platform for social transformation. The Zongo Magajia Association is an association representing Muslim women group in the various communities.
The Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, interacting with the members, reminded the women of the unique role women play towards peace building and encourage gender activist to play leading roles as the country would be going to the polls on December 7.
She therefore appealed to the women to pray for the country for the right president to be elected, as well as train and advice their children not to get themselves involved in any form of violent activity during the election period.
Nana Oye Lithur said President John Dramani Mahama was doing all within his reach to ensure that women were given enough roles in the governance system of the country; hence the need for re-election to continue the good works being done.
Hajia Kande Majesty, the Coordinator of Magajia Association, expressed her appreciation to the Gender Minister for the initiative. She said women were capable of talking to their husbands, children and the community at large to ensure that they did not engage in activities that would threaten the peace in the country, hence this venture.
Hajia Majesty said in the event of riots and violence, women and children suffered the most and therefore needed to ensure peace at all cost. “We want peace and unity in the Zongo communities and for this reason we have come together to enable us have one voice to promote peace in this year’s elections,” she said.
She said they would propagate the message to ensure that no person from any of these communities engaged in any activity which would threaten the peace of the country.
