Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, has received 254 pick ups purchased by government as part of moves to resource the local assemblies and facilitate their work. Speaking at the handing over of 115 of the vehicles procured from AutoParts Limited head office in Accra's North Industrial Area, Hajia Mahama said that the Nissan Patrol pickups will be under the control of the Coordinating Director of the district assemblies for official work. She said 254 Nissan Patrol SUVs are also expected by the end of November to resource the District Chief Executives.
Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development in charge of Economic and Development, Collins Ntim said that government is very committed to issues of decentralization and good governance. He said that the assemblies are faced with issues of mobilizing enough resources to compliment what the central administration makes available. "The Ministry therefore, took the initiative to procure vehicles not only for the district chief executives but for the central administration so they can get vehicles to address the issues of mobility challenges" he stated.
He said that the Nissan SUVs will also help the DCEs reach the people and get to know the various challenges facing the communities under their jurisdiction. Mr Ntim said that 3000 motorbikes have already been given to the agricultural extension officers within the various assemblies as well as 216 motorbikes to all the district departments of agriculture in order to help farmers expand their production efficiencies.
This is to help promote the Decentralized Industrialization Agenda under the 1 district 1 factory program as part of the President's vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid. Handing over the keys to Hajia Mahama, the General Manager for Finance and Administration of Autoparts Limited, Mr Emmanuel Abuga-Williams said that they have decided to absorb the cost of branding of the pickups in order to maintain their relationship with the government while providing quality products. He said the drivers of the pickups will be given free orientation.
Mr Subhi Accad, Chief Executive Officer for Autoparts Limited said that a training program will be organised throughout the country in collaboration with the ministry to train the drivers and offer servicing. He also said that measures have been put in place to allow the cars to go up to 5000kms before servicing.
