Traditional authorities have been urged to reserve lands for farming to increase food production.
Mr Stephen Kwaku Agyei, a farmer at Baakoniaba in the Sunyani Municipality who made the call also advised households to go into backyard gardening to enhance national food security.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, (GNA), Mr Agyei also appealed to farmers and Ghanaians in general to protect water bodies by planting trees around rivers and streams in their neigbourhood for future benefit.
He expressed disgust over the wanton destruction, and drying up of water bodies due to uncontrolled human activities and bad farming practices.
Mr Agyei praised the implementation of the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs programmes, and called on citizens to engage in backyard gardening as a means of supporting the programme to improve on national food security.
He regretted that virtually all arable lands in the Municipality, were being sold out to estate developers, to the neglect of other sectors.
Mr Ageyi called on the Lands Commission and the Administrator of Stool Lands secretariat to intensify their monitoring and supervision roles to check the sale of lands in the Municipality.
He advised potential land buyers to check from the Lands Commission before in order to avoid developing in water ways.
