It has also stated categorically that the appointment of VC of the University was its sole prerogative provided in section 13 (1) and (2) of Act 672 and did not intend to share it with any other entity.

“We are fully in support of the administration and are proud of the successes Rev Father Afful-Broni has chalked in the just a period of seven months after his induction and assumption of duty as the substantive VC”.

“The Very Rev. Father Anthony Afful-Broni remains the substantive Vice Chancellor of University of Education, Winneba and will fully be support to carry out this mandate until the end of his tenure in 2021”.

In a release signed by Professor Emmanuel Abakah, Chairman of the Governing Council and read by Mr. John Darko a member of the Council at a forum at the University, the VC, they stated, had performed his functions to the total satisfaction of the Council.

The forum was to set the records straight on the current impasse at the UEW, which culminated in violent protests resulting in the destruction of school’s property leading to the closure of the School upon the advice of the Central Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

The protesters, mainly students, had staged a three-day demonstration calling for the reinstatement of some lecturers reported to have been sacked by the VC and also called on the Authorities to relieve the VC of his post.

The Governing Council was unhappy that UEW had taken the headlines in the media for all the negative reasons, just when the university had achieved some relative peace after the 2017/18 crises and had initiated progress in the area of discipline, law and order in the administration of the university that had also enabled a conducive environment for academic work.

According to the Council, the disciplinary decisions on some senior members who were found culpable of various offences were in line with the university’s Statutes 36, Schedule G, which found their actions prejudicial to the efficient function of the university and brought UEW's name into disrepute.

It stated further that, any staff who have been dismissed, suspended,  demoted or have had their appointments terminated were taken through the due processes as established under Statute 36 and in accordance with the Schedule G.

Earlier, the Council Members led by Prof. Abakah and Very Rev. Father Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni took the media round the three campuses of the University in Winneba to assess the damages caused by the aggrieved students estimated at about GHc 250,000.00

The items, which were damaged includes six buses, four ATMs, Glass windows and doors, air conditioning gadgets at the three campuses and the wind screen of Police Petrol Pick-up .

All the damaged items the Council indicated, must be repaired or replaced before students report back to the two campuses (Winneba and Ajumako).

Based on appeals by well-meaning Ghanaians and other respective personalities, the Council, would consider for review any petition the affected staff May bring before it on case by case basis.
