The National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed worry over recent clashes sparked by a land dispute at Dagomba-Line near Asawase in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality, resulting in the deaths of two people.
"We are not happy at the turn of events at Dagomba-Line. The Council, consequently, is appealing to the feuding factions to exercise restraint and abide by the law in addressing their grievances," the Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the Council, advised.
What started as a misunderstanding between one Imam Abdul Rahman, who claims to be owner of the said disputed land and some residents of Dagomba-Line, on Tuesday, July 09, 2019, escalated into a free-for-all fight.
The ensuing conflict has so far seen two people lose their lives, while scores of people have also sustained various degrees of injury, with about one hundred suspects being arrested by the police.
Additionally, a number of houses, container and wooden stores, cars and other valuables have been torched.
Most Rev. Prof. Asante, who was speaking to the media after the Council paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at his Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, said nothing could be substituted for peace.
The visit was to express the Council's heartfelt gratitude to the king for the instrumental role he played in leading the Eminent Chiefs to bring lasting solution to the protracted Dagbon chieftaincy crisis.
The courtesy call delegation included: the Rev. Dr. Nii Amoo-Darku, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, Nana Susubiribi Krobea Asante, Nana Agyakuma Difie II, Rev. Emmanuel Badu Amoah and Mr. George Amoh, all members of the Council.
Most Rev. Asante praised Otumfuo Osei Tutu for his good sense of judgment, which has helped to promote peace and stability in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
He took the opportunity to draw the Asantehene's attention to the recent conflict, saying, "We are appealing to His Royal Majesty to once again intervene in order to restore peace and order over the disputed land."
Otumfuo Osei Tutu reiterated his commitment supporting the Peace Council in realizing its mission statement.
"We cannot ensure any meaningful development as a nation and attract investors, if there is no peace," he said.
Meanwhile, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), had deployed a security patrol team to the conflict zone to restore order, following the recent clashes.
