Alpha Lotto Limited, a private lottery operator on Wednesday, presented groceries, worth GH¢30, 000, and cheque of GH¢20,000 to the Weija Leprosarium in Accra to support the upkeep of inmates.
The items included rice, cooking oil, mackerel and bottled water.
A member of Alpha Lotto Limited, Mr Emmanuel Senanu, said the gesture formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to respond to the needs of the less privileged in society.
He said the company existed not only to engage in lottery but to also help address some of the challenges faced by individuals and institutions that catered for the needy and the vulnerable.
He said the company aimed at raising revenue to support the welfare of service veterans as well as contributing to the development of the country through payment of taxes, employment creation, and corporate social responsibility initiative.
“We regularly donate to orphanages, the aged and the needy. This year, we decided to share our love with the inmates here. It is no fault of theirs that they have the condition and so we urge every individual to show them love and cater for their needs,” he added.
He commended management of the leprosarium and the team of caretakers for their devotion and love for the inmates.
He also encouraged the inmates to have faith in God and assured them of their continuous support to assist alleviate their plight.
The administrator of the leprosarium, Madam Esther Geh, who received the items on behalf of the home expressed gratitude to Alpha Lotto Limited for their support to the welfare of the inmates.
She said the leprosarium, since its inception some 70 years ago, had relied on the benevolence of individuals and organisations for assistance.
Madam Geh indicated that the leprosarium aimed to embark on a building project which would serve as a rehabilitation centre for the inmates for proper care and treatment.
She said the home also intended to have one hot meal a day for the inmates since the current meal allowance was not helping in sustaining the aged in acquiring the necessary balanced diet required for healthy living.
Madam Geh appealed to government to increase the daily meal allowance of lepers from GH¢1.00 to a more substantial amount and also called on individuals, corporate organisations and institutions to support their project to achieve its aim.
