Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Director of Education, has stated that the youth had a responsibility to halt the alarming rate the environment and the ecosystems were being destroyed.
Mankind's existence and the fate of the future generation, he said, were being threatened by the continuous destruction and pollution of the environment and called for a pragmatic solution to the menace.
Mr Obeng-Darko was speaking at the inauguration of Toase Secondary School Tourism and Environmental Club at Toase on Sunday.
He urged the students to step up awareness creation among the public on healthy environmental sanitation.
Dr Kenneth Gbeddy, the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Director of Food and Agriculture, said economic growth, reduction of poverty and enhancing food security cannot be achieved without the effective development of the productive capacity of the agricultural sector.
He said in the quest to develop and increase agricultural production, farming practices such as the improper use of agrochemicals and fertilisers had contributed to serious environmental pollution.
Mr Raphael Kwadwo Amankwaah, the Assistant Headmaster of the school, advised the club not to limit its activities to the beautification of the school but also to extend the clean-up exercise to the environs.
Nana Opoku Asiamah Afrifa II, the Toasehene who presided, commended the club for its sense of direction and responsibility and its immense contribution to health environmental sanitation in the area.
Nana Asiamah Afrifa, who is the life patron of the club, offered a large tract of farmland for the cultivation of food crops to raise adequate funds to support the club's activities and programmes.
