The Ashanti Regional office of the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC), has intensified awareness creation on its mandate in the Kumasi Metropolis.
The aim was to educate the public on its roles and responsibilities as a utility regulator and bridge the gap between the PURC and utility consumers.
It also sought to strengthen its relationship with the public as their mouthpiece in resolving issues with utility companies amicably.
One of these awareness creation exercise has been held at the Bantama Adventist Church, attracting participants from the surrounding communities.
They also engaged with some market women and traders in other markets including the Asafo market.
Mr Edward Boduah, Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, said the engagement would increase visibility of the Commission and promote the culture of compliance and responsible utility and resource usage.
He said they also equipped participants with knowledge to make informed decisions on utility usage.
He advised the public to pay their utility bills promptly and avoid illegal connections, which could lead to legal action against them.
The public must be on the lookout for people whose stock in trade was to engage in illegal activities including cable theft and other illegal activities,” he advised.
Mr Boduah disclosed that the Commission recently was able to retrieve an amount of GH¢ 262,558,53 as refund for consumers.
He pledged the Commission’s preparedness to work hard to ensure that the public enjoys using electricity and water peacefully.
He said their office was always ready to receive and assist consumers to address their concerns.
