The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called for urgent and concrete measures to resolve the protracted conflict in Bawku and restore lasting peace and security to the area.

He criticised what he described as constant verbal assurances from government authorities, urging instead for lasting, practical solutions that guarantee the safety of residents and rebuild public trust.

Speaking during the ordination of ministerial probationers at the Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church at Burma Camp in Accra on Sunday, Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye expressed deep concern over the prolonged insecurity in Bawku.

He indicated that the conflict has significantly affected the Church’s ability to deliver critical services, especially in the areas of healthcare and education, to communities in the conflict-hit zone.

“Somewhere last week, the president gave an order that the military accompany people who travel the Bawku road, which tells you that the problem has not been solved. We need to deal with the problem right at its root.

“If we are able to deal with it from the root, we would not be doing this ‘cosmetic’ approach of having students go to school, and then a few weeks after, they have to go back.

“Just a while back, some students were going to school, and a gun was fired into their bus. How do you expect me to let these people go to school? Though it is my school, I cannot assure them of safety.

“But I am confident that if our national leaders, security agencies, and the traditional leaders of the two ethnic groups sit down and work together, there will be peace,” he stated.
