The Ministry of Education on Wednesday, July 2, welcomed a high-level parliamentary delegation from Zimbabwe, led by Hon. Dr. Thokozani Khupe, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development.
The delegation, which included Members of Parliament, committee officials, and representatives from the Zimbabwean Embassy in Ghana, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu. The visit forms part of a broader study tour aimed at understudying Ghana’s education system, innovation ecosystem, and industrial development hubs.
During the engagement, Haruna Iddrisu took the opportunity to brief the delegation on Ghana’s comprehensive education reforms, policy direction, and ongoing strategies to enhance access, equity, quality, and relevance across all levels of education. He reiterated the government’s commitment to aligning education with national development goals, particularly through technical and vocational training, STEM promotion, and digital transformation.

A key highlight of the meeting was the vibrant exchange of ideas on innovation in education, governance in tertiary institutions, and the role of science and technology as enablers of economic progress.
In a follow-up discussion, the delegation expressed strong interest in Ghana’s innovation centres and how the country effectively links education with industry and entrepreneurship. This curiosity opened the door for deeper dialogue around ICT advancement and infrastructure in Ghana.
According to Haruna Iddrisu, the transition into the digital era makes it critical for governments to strategically invest in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
“We do have innovation hubs. I recall when, as Minister for Trade and Industry, we set up the ICT park at Free Zones with World Bank support of 10 million dollars in the Tema industrial enclave. Our institutions are doing pretty well. ICT is still not the best. We have to get more connected and deploy more fibre and broadband,” Mr. Iddrisu said.
The visit signifies the growing collaboration among African nations in the fields of education and development. Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to stronger bilateral relations, knowledge-sharing, and collaborative efforts in education and innovation.
As part of their itinerary, the Zimbabwean delegation will visit selected tertiary institutions, innovation hubs, and industrial zones across Ghana. The tours are expected to provide firsthand insights into Ghana’s implementation of education and innovation policy, further enriching cross-country learning and partnership.
