President John Dramani Mahama is set to convene a high-level Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra on August 5, aimed at reshaping global health governance and advancing Africa-led health reforms.
The summit, themed “African Health Sovereignty in a Reimagined Global Health Governance Architecture”, will bring together African Heads of State, international health leaders, and development partners to endorse bold new strategies for health independence and structural reform.
According to a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the summit will formally launch The Accra Initiative, an action-driven framework designed to align global health governance with African priorities. Key outcomes are expected to include:
-
The establishment of a Presidential High-Level Panel to design a new roadmap for global health governance reform.
-
The launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative, promoting investment-driven, country-led health systems supported by domestic resources and strategic partnerships.
-
Adoption of the Accra Compact, a shared African vision for health sovereignty and a fairer global health order.
President Mahama emphasized the urgent need for reform, citing outdated global health systems that no longer reflect Africa’s demographic or economic realities. He declared:
“Africa must take charge of its health destiny—not in isolation, but through determined, coordinated action… reshaping the rules that govern global health—rules that must reflect the voices and realities of our people.”
