The Ministry of Health has strongly condemned the assault on medical personnel at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), following a viral video showing relatives of an accident victim clashing with emergency staff over alleged delays in treatment.
The incident, which escalated into verbal aggression and the physical assault of a nurse, forced hospital management to call in the Ghana Police Service to restore order.
In a press release signed by Deputy Director and Spokesperson Tony Goodman, the Ministry described the attack as "unfortunate" and warned that such actions "compromise the delivery of critical healthcare services and endanger the lives of both patients and healthcare providers."The statement outlined immediate measures, including "beefing up security" at the hospital and investigating the circumstances that led to the altercation.
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, visited the facility to assess the situation firsthand and assured staff of the Ministry’s support. "We call on the public to exercise patience, cooperation, and mutual respect at all times to enable healthcare workers to provide effective and timely care," the release added.
The hospital had earlier explained that its emergency unit—one of Ghana’s busiest—was handling multiple critical cases when the relatives "forced their way into the triage area," disrupting services and threatening clinicians. The assault temporarily halted operations before police intervention.
The Ministry reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against attacks on healthcare workers, emphasising that their safety is "a top priority."
