Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving conditions within the Ghana Prisons Service, stressing that the welfare of inmates and the capacity of the Service remain a national priority.
The Vice-President gave the assurance during a meeting with the leadership of the Service, led by the Director-General, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, in Accra on Monday.
“As a responsible nation, it is our duty to ensure dignified conditions for inmates, to offer meaningful reforms, and to provide the necessary support for their reintegration into society,” she said.
The discussions centred on the pressing challenges confronting the institution and strategies for addressing them.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the need for stronger public education on prison reforms and called for closer collaboration between the Prisons Service, other state agencies, and the media.
She commended the Service for its innovative interventions, particularly its growing agricultural campaign, which she described as promising and impactful.
The Vice-President assured the leadership that government would continue to back initiatives aimed at transforming the Prisons Service into a modern and effective institution capable of fulfilling its mandate.
