Madam Dorothy Amuah, Entrepreneur and Founder of Dorothy Hope Foundation (DHF) and a breast cancer survivour, says the disease is treatable if detected early.
She said the breast cancer had five stages of extent, hence through regular screening, any abnormalities could be detected and treated early to save lives.
Madam Amuah said this at the 11th Annual Eye For Cancer Walkathon 2025 which started at the Cantonments Post Office and ended at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
The Community walk featured survivor-led moments, wellness engagement, on-site health information and screenings, and solidarity across Ghanaian and diaspora groups, schools, and corporate teams.
October every year is dedicated and designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This year’s celebration was on the theme: “Catch it Early; Treat it Right; Survive it.”
Breast cancer is a kind of cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the breast tissue.
Research shows that breast cancer causes an estimated 670,000 deaths globally in 2022 and approximately 0.5 to 1 per cent of breast cancers occur in men.
The Founder explained that it was difficult to cure breast cancer when it got to stages three and four since it would have spread to other organs.
She advocated prevention of the disease instead of spending fortunes on treatment.
“…Our hospitals and government spend so much more money treating cancer at a later stage, whereas if they catch it early, it is less expensive for everybody, including the patients themselves.”
“Every step tells a story of resilience. These events rally our communities around prevention, early screening, and the dignity of care for women across Ghana.” Madam Amuah added.
Dr Louisa Ademki Matey, Accra Metro Director of Health Service, urged men to encourage women in their lives to adopt regular breast screening.
“People say we make so much noise about breast cancer, but I do not think we make enough noise. We need to talk about breast cancer every day,” she stated.
Dr Matey said breast cancer diagnosis was not a death sentence and it was better for people to know their status instead of being afraid of the unknown.
Madam Kisha Bird, Founder, Travel Deeper Inc. appealed to the government to take up the cost of breast cancer treatment or subsidise it through the National Health Insurance Scheme.
She urged the Ministry of Health to prioritise regular free screenings and sensitisation programmes on the disease.
“We’re proud to stand with Dorothy’s Hope to spotlight women’s wellness year-round. Our diaspora community is ready to walk together, serve together, and ensure that more women can access the information and care they need.” Madam Bird said.
Lady Dentaa Amoateng,Founder of the Grow Unite Build Africa (GUBA) Foundation, bemoaned how Ghanaian women were limited concerning early detection and affordable care.
“Together, we can shift the narrative, expand access, and build stronger, healthier communities.” she added.
Mrs Manyeyoo Bortei-Abraham, a breast cancer surviour, recounted her journey with disease.
She said having strong support systems of family, friends and Non-Governmental Organisations such as the DHF which helped her through recovery, was important in the breast cancer fight.
