At a special congregation in Tamale, the University highlighted that the award acknowledges Ya-Na’s dedicated service to Dagbon and Ghana, including his contributions to sustainable education, social transformation, and peacebuilding within and beyond Dagbon.

The conferment of the honorary doctorate formally made Ya-Na a certificate holder and alumnus of UDS, the premier university in Northern Ghana.

Recognition of Leadership and Service

Prof. Alhassan Seidu, Vice Chancellor of UDS, said the award reflects Ya-Na’s significant contributions to humanity and his exemplary leadership in the Dagbon Traditional Area. He praised the Overlord for his ability to turn conflicts into unity and development, reconciling rival factions and promoting forgiveness and dialogue for lasting peace over the past decade.

The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that Ya-Na had donated 500 acres of farmland to the University to establish a campus in Yendi, emphasizing that “Education is the engine of growth which the Overlord holds high.” He encouraged stakeholders, chiefs, opinion leaders, and the youth to support UDS and the broader development of northern Ghana.

Ya-Na’s Response

Accepting the honorary doctorate, Ya-Na Abukari II described the recognition as not only an honour but also a challenge to contribute even more to the progress of the Northern Region and the Dagbon Kingdom. He emphasized that the award represents every living soul in the Dagbon Traditional Area, not just him personally.

The Overlord reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the growth and progress of UDS, appealing to all indigenes of Dagbon and residents of northern Ghana to assist in strengthening the University.
