The works, which commenced on Thursday, August 6, 2026, were completed on schedule despite technical and operational challenges encountered during the exercise, GWL said in a press release issued by Mr Stanley Martey, Chief Manager, Public Relations and Communications.

The completed works involved the replacement of weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch, equivalent to 525mm and 1050mm diameter, Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.

GWL said following the successful completion of the maintenance exercise, water production had resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant.

It, however, cautioned that the restoration of water supply would be progressive as the transmission lines and reservoirs were filled and operating pressures gradually rebuilt.

“Barring unforeseen technical challenges, more consumers are expected to receive water as the system stabilizes,” the Company said.

The development follows GWL’s earlier announcement of a three-day shutdown of the Kpong Treatment Plant to enable engineers to isolate and replace deteriorated sections of the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.

GWL had said routine engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated sections along the transmission pipelines requiring urgent replacement to prevent major pipeline failures, reduce water losses and ensure reliable water supply.

The maintenance involved the isolation of five sections of varying lengths of the transmission pipelines, resulting in temporary interruptions in water supply and reduced water pressure for consumers supplied by the Kpong Water Supply System.

The affected areas included the entire eastern part of Accra, including Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, communities within the Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities.

Other affected areas included Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns.

GWL said despite the resumption of production, the return of water from the Kpong Treatment Plant should not be interpreted as a return to continuous water supply across all affected communities.

The Company’s Water Demand Management and rationing programme remains in effect to ensure the equitable distribution of available water.

Customers have, therefore, been encouraged to continue observing their usual water rationing schedules while the network is gradually recharged, reservoirs replenished and pressures restored.

The Company appealed for continued patience from consumers as the system stabilises and supply is progressively restored.

The Managing Director of GWL, Mr Adam Mutawakilu, who personally inspected the works at various stages, commended the engineers, contractors, maintenance team and technical personnel for their dedication, professionalism and resilience in completing the assignment on schedule.

He particularly acknowledged the leadership and commitment of the Lead and Chief Manager, ATMA Production, Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the General Manager in charge of Operations, Mr Michael Botse Baidoo, together with their respective teams.

Mr Mutawakilu said the successful completion of the works demonstrated the value of teamwork, technical expertise, strong coordination and committed leadership in addressing critical infrastructure challenges.

The Managing Director also expressed appreciation to the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr Kwame Kpekpena, and the ECG technical team for their support throughout the exercise.

He particularly commended the ECG team for working closely with GWL personnel, including working throughout the night, to address critical electrical and operational requirements and facilitate the timely resumption of water production at Kpong.

Mr Mutawakilu also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field personnel, support teams and other stakeholders whose efforts contributed to the successful completion of the intervention.

GWL expressed appreciation to its customers and the people of the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions for their patience, understanding and cooperation during the maintenance exercise.

The Company said the transmission line was being closely monitored as water supply was progressively restored.

The maintenance exercise was part of GWL’s proactive infrastructure maintenance programme, which the Company said was aimed at improving the reliability, efficiency and sustainability of water supply.

GWL had also indicated that replacing the deteriorated pipeline sections would significantly reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and enhance the long-term reliability of water supply to customers in Tema and the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region.

The Company reaffirmed its commitment to proactive maintenance, infrastructure modernisation and improved water supply.
