The appointment signals a major escalation in the Chamber’s commitment to local content sovereignty. Dr. Kupagme will lead the establishment of an agriculture-focused startup that will serve as the commercial and research engine for the Chamber’s Agriculture Content Sector.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the move places a leading scientific mind at the helm of a pan-African effort to protect Africa’s agricultural heritage from the twin threats of patented seeds and genetically modified organisms introduced by global corporations.

Responding to his appointment, Dr. Kupagme declared his readiness to lead Africa into a new era of sustained food security and agricultural sovereignty.

“The continent is gradually losing its seed sovereignty due to patent seeds and the introduction of GMO seeds from certain global corporations. We are watching the erosion of what our ancestors preserved for generations, and we must act now,” Dr. Kupagme stated.

Dr. Kupagme holds a Ph.D. in Mycology from the University of Tartu, Estonia, where his thesis focused on the biodiversity of African soil fungi.

He brings both scientific rigor and practical experience to the role. In 2021, he led a training workshop on behalf of Messiah Organics Chain, a member of the ACCP, for NADMO officials, farmers, and agricultural extension officers in Nsawam on symbiotic microbes and organic farming systems.

According to the statement his research focuses on the richness of soil fungal communities, fungal biogeography, plant-fungal interactions, and the application of these interactions to enhance agricultural productivity in Africa.

“One of Dr. Kupagme’s most significant recent publications is titled “Continental-scale diversity of African soil fungi,” which was published in Fungal Diversity (Impact Factor: 24.5). As the first and corresponding author, he contributed to this landmark study, which offers the most comprehensive spatial assessment of African soil fungal biogeography to date. This work highlights his leadership in science, technical expertise, and ability to coordinate large-scale international research collaborations. “I will lead other Africa Image Ambassadors to protect Africa’s agricultural content sovereignty and defend the legacy left behind by our ancestors for the next generations,” he pledged.

“This extends beyond farming to the survival of our people and the dignity of our continent”, he said.

Across the continent, Image Ambassadors have expressed excitement about the appointment and pledged their readiness to collaborate.

Nana Nketia, an Africa Image Ambassador, Chairman of ACCP’s Traditional Herbal Content, and receiver of the 2024 Most Impactful Herbal Advocate of the Year at the Ghana Leadership Awards, pledged his full support for Dr. Kupagme.

“My team and I have been educating people on traditional herbal practices and food sovereignty through radio appearances and, at times, even in commercial transport, to help preserve and refine our ancestral knowledge. Our ancestors fought to secure this continent for us; we must also do our part to leave a better Africa for the next generation,” he said.

Mr. Charles Ziwa, a prominent lead agroecology consultant associated with the Africa Organic Standards Association (AOSA) and known for advising farmers on crop health optimization and plant sap sugar levels using the Brix measurement approach, welcomed the appointment.

Ziwa, who is also a member of the ACCP, revealed plans to work with Dr. Kupagme and other African agriculture content producers to develop sustainable food systems for the continent.

“I am excited to work with Dr. Kupagme and other African agriculture content producers to develop sustainable food systems for the continent,” Ziwa stated. “Through AOSA, we have been training farmers on improving Brix levels, the sugar, vitamin, and mineral content in plant sap, which is critical for pest resistance and nutrition. With Dr. Kupagme’s leadership, we can scale this work across Africa.”

Mr. Kwadwo Dwomoh II, lead systems engineer for the ACCP, confirmed that the software engineering team is ready to work with Dr. Kupagme to develop digital systems for African agriculture challenges.

“We are prepared to build the technological infrastructure that will support Dr. Kupagme’s role, from farmer advisory platforms to soil health monitoring systems,” he said.

ACCP Nigeria Country Director Phil Efe Benard welcomed the appointment, saying it would help put Africa on the path towards stronger local agricultural content. He pledged the full support of ACCP members in Nigeria for the initiative. “We have seen what is happening with our food systems, extension services, and input supply.

For the benefit of the next generation, we must get it right in our time,” he said.

David Adofo, Head of Research and Development at the ACCP, noted that Dr. Kupagme is arriving at the right time to help implement some of the Chamber’s research and solutions on agriculture. “We have been developing frameworks for agricultural content sovereignty. Dr. Kupagme’s expertise will help us translate these frameworks into tangible outcomes for African farmers and communities,” he stated.

Daniel Aboagye, Head of the Educational Content Sector of the ACCP, revealed the preparedness of all content sectors, including education, to work with Dr. Kupagme and benefit from his research. “We are ready to implement some of his research findings in our schools’ agritech and farming projects across the continent,” he said.

Eric Amegah, head of ACCP representatives in the Gulf States, said his team is ready to work with Dr. Kupagme and establish partnerships between the ACCP and relevant organizations in the region.

Mr. Roger Quartey, Chairman of the ACCP’s Media and Culture Sector and a legendary figure in Ghanaian cinema, described Dr. Kupagme’s appointment as a watershed moment for the Chamber.

“Dr. Kupagme’s leadership will secure Africa’s agricultural future while also providing content and narratives that can be used in media, education, and cultural exchange,” Chairman Roger Quartey said. “His work is foundational to the stories we tell about Africa’s ability to feed itself and lead the world.”

President of the ACCP, Nana Dwomoh-Doyen Benjamin, expressed deep optimism about the milestones the organization continues to achieve.

The Chamber is a Civil Society Organization (CSO) of the African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), the AU’s advisory organ composed of social and professional groups from member states.

“The Chamber is moving beyond dialogue to action,” Nana Dwomoh-Doyen said. “Dr. Kupagme’s appointment reflects the quality of talent the ACCP attracts and the seriousness with which we approach local content sovereignty. We have received complaints from citizens about the challenges of accessing information from state institutions, and we have developed homegrown AI solutions to address them.

Now we are tackling the foundational challenge of food sovereignty with one of Africa’s finest scientific minds.”

Nana Dwomoh-Doyen revealed that the Chamber had plans to partner other agencies and organizations in the interest of Africa and its people.

“We are open to collaboration with governments, development partners, and private sector actors who share our vision of a self-reliant, culturally vibrant, and economically integrated Africa,” he said.

The appointment comes at a critical time when Africa faces unprecedented challenges to its agricultural sovereignty.

The continent imports billions of dollars worth of food annually, while its farmers struggle with the rising cost of patented seeds and chemical inputs.

Dr. Kupagme’s leadership signals a shift towards organic, sustainable, and locally-driven solutions.

“Africa’s agricultural content sovereignty is not a luxury but a necessity,” Dr. Kupagme concluded. “We have the knowledge, the soil, and the people. What we need now is the will to protect what is ours and the courage to build what we deserve.”
