The government is set to extend electricity to 206 unelectrified communities across 18 districts in the Volta Region under the Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative, REIP.
The project, being implemented by Byes and Ways Limited, is expected to be completed within six months, according to the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor.
Speaking at the launch and sensitisation programme in Ho on Sunday, August 30, 2026, Mr Jinapor said the project forms part of government’s flagship Big Push programme, aimed at accelerating electricity access and narrowing the country’s power access gap.
Government has allocated GH¢598 million for the Volta Region project, with the investment expected to extend power to communities that have remained outside the national grid.
Mr Jinapor said the Ministry will closely monitor the project to ensure it meets the required standards, delivers value for money and is completed on schedule.
“Government is committed to completing these works within six months,” the Minister announced.
The Minister also announced that government is adopting a targeted regional approach to accelerate the connection of unelectrified communities over the next four years.
The Savannah, Central, Oti and Volta Regions have been selected for this year’s interventions.
Government’s broader target is to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, as part of efforts to ensure that underserved communities are not left behind in the country’s development.
Mr Jinapor has therefore urged traditional authorities, local assemblies and beneficiary communities to support the project by facilitating access to project sites and helping resolve right-of-way challenges.
He also called on residents to protect the infrastructure from vandalism and illegal connections, observe electrical safety practices and pay their electricity bills promptly.
The government says these measures will be critical to ensuring that the expanded electricity network remains sustainable once the connections are completed.
