About 40 members of the Birim South District Assembly, opinion leaders and Chiefs on Wednesday, attended a workshop on Social Auditing at Akyem Oda.
It was organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to get the electorate to participate actively in Local Governance. .
Mr Yaw Ofosu-Baah, Deputy District Director of the NCCE, said Social Auditing empowered the electorate to monitor the activities of District Assemblies to ensure transparency and accountability in the execution of government projects.
He called on them to initiate, implement and take constructive actions to ensure the accountability of resources put into such projects.
Mr Ofosu-Baah explained that with proper auditing communities would feel confident to face their problems and challenges and remove apathy among them.
Ms Agnes Opoku Asantewaa, Principal Field Officer of the NCCE, called for more women involvement in the forth-coming District Assembly elections.
She noted that even though about 52 percent of the population were females few women are in Parliament and criticised the political parties for their failure to field them in their safe constituencies.
Ms Asantewaa said many women in leadership positions were performing creditably and stated that, "This therefore sends a positive signal that certain jobs used to be considered as reserved for men can be better performed by women with relative ease".
They called for involvement of District Chief Executives in the award of government contracts in their areas.
Some of the male participants opposed women participation in politics because they tend to lord it over people when they got high positions.
