The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has
begun the installation of prepaid metres to its customers in the Cape Coast municipality.
Mr Eric Asante, public relations officer of the Central Region branch of
the Company, who made this known to the GNA in an interview in Cape Coast on Tuesday said the installation started last month at the Ewim Nurses and Ayiko-Ayiko flats, both suburbs of Cape Coast.
He said the programme was a gradual process and that by the end of the year the company would cover the whole of the Cape Coast township as well as Kasoa.
Mr Asante said customers have a lot to benefit from the prepaid metres, adding that with the prepaid metres, customers would decide on the amount of money to spend on electricity, no issuing of electricity bills at the end of the month or no risk of a customer being disconnected
"It can help you use electricity wisely and reduce your expenditure on it and tenants who move out of residence cannot leave behind an unpaid bill", he added.
He said under the pilot installation, customers would have their metres changed with prepaid metres at not cost, but added that subsequently customers who would want to have prepaid metres would pay an installation fee in addition to service connection charge.
Mr. Asante however, assured customers that his outfit has put in place the necessary measures to address the issue of people tampering with metres as well as do away with long queues that customers had to go through before buying units as being encountered by customers in some regions.
He said the company has therefore embarked on a sensitization programme to educate the public on the use of the prepaid metres and appealed to them to cooperate with the company to ensure the success of the programme.
