The Wassa West District Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) recorded 59 still births out of the total births of 1,526 babies last year.
Dr. Jack Gale, Wassa West District Director of Health Service said this at the end of a two-day neo-natal resuscitation workshop organized by the District Directorate of Health Service for midwives and maternity staff of the Tarkwa government Hospital at Tarkwa.
The two day neo-natal resuscitation training was a refresher course for the midwives and maternity staff to help them in their work.
Dr Gale said Ghana in conjunction with its development partners initiated a high impart delivery project to adopt various strategies to minimize infant mortality rate.
Some of these strategies include regular training for health workers and education for pregnant women to attend ante-natal clinic, he said.
Dr Gale said the service would make every possible effort to reduce the number of still birth in the District to the barest minimum to enable the government to meet the millennium development goals.
Dr. Gale appealed to pregnant women to attend ante-natal and post-natal clinics to make their medical records right for proper health checks.
The facilitator of the workshop Dr. Paul Acquah advised health workers to upgrade themselves for efficient delivery.
He also urged expectant mothers to make good use of the hospital facilities, saying, everything was virtually free especially with the introduction of the Health Insurance scheme.
