A Kumasi Circuit court on Tuesday remanded Nana Osei Kwadwo 41,a trader into prison custody for allegedly duping a police officer and five others of several hundreds of Ghana Cedis between July 2007 and August, this year.
Nana Kwadwo pleaded not guilty and would re- appear on September 2.
Police Chief Inspector Wilfred Salia told the court presided over by Mr Adjei Frimpong that the victims included three nurses, a university graduate and a second-hand cloth dealer.
He said the accused and victims, Detective Sergeant E. Amankwaa, Miss Isabella Opoku, Miss Elisabeth Boamah Asante and Miss Barbara Boateng, all nurses, Mr Kofi Adjei Bempah, a university graduate and Madam Yaa Dufie, a second-hand clothes dealer lived in Kumasi.
The prosecution said Sergeant Amankwaa knew the accused during investigations of a stealing case in July, this year and on August 3, he had a call from the accused who introduced himself as Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bright Oduro, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Police Commander.
Police Chief Inspector Salia said the accused instructed the investigator to handle the case with care and would assist in his promotion and demanded 150 Ghana Cedis from him for some police officers who would facilitate his promotion.
He said the investigator feigned interest and arranged for the money to be given to the accused at Ultimate Restaurant in Kumasi.
Police Chief Inspector Salia said on August 14, the accused met the investigator at the restaurant to collect the money but was arrested after taking the money and after investigations charged with the offence.
He said during investigations the three nurses identified the accused for allegedly duping them in August last year under the pretext of securing them American visas and collected 4,400 Ghana Cedis from them.
Police Chief Inspector Salia said the accused also duped Mr Bempah and Madam Dufie in the sum of 550 Ghana Cedis under the pretext of helping them to get enlisted into the Ghana Navy and Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS).
