A Bolgatanga District Court on Tuesday remanded in prison custody Nyaaba Atubga, a driver, and his fiancée Asaah Mohammed for beating a woman and wounding her eleven-month old baby.
Atubga was charged for abetting crime while Mohammed was charged with assault.
They are to reappear on September 2.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Ferdinand Koole said the accused persons live in the same house at Bukere, a suburb of Bolgatanga with Linda Akolbire and her baby.
On July 17, Atugba informed his fiancée that Linda and her co-tenants were gossiping about her, claiming that she constantly changed men.
Asaah attacked Linda, injuring the baby on her forehead.
Mr. Osman Abdul Hakim, the judge, said the action of the accused persons was dangerous to the health of the mother and baby and that the remand was to serve as a deterrent to others.
A young woman who puffed in court apparently in protest against the judge's remand of her friends was charged for contempt in facet curia and was to serve her sentence with her friends.
When police tried to escort her to a stand-by police vehicle, she feigned she was unconscious and upon extensive plea from a lawyer the judge reconsidered the decision and set her free.
He warned members of the public to desist from casting insinuations whenever judges made certain decisions.
