The Hohoe Municipal Environmental Health Inspectorate is seeking the promulgation of more penal laws and byelaws to check environmental degradation and abuses in the municipality.
Mr Daniel Ayitey Otoo, the Director of the Inspectorate, told the Ghana News Agency that the town's Ordinance (CAP 86) with its paltry fines have outlived its usefulness and not punitive enough to serve as deterrent.
He said fines are as low as two Ghana cedis and five Ghana cedis maximum and called for an upward review to serve as motivation for staff of the unit to work harder and ensuring a clean environment.
Mr Otoo said the inspectorate was making efforts to have byelaws passed by the assembly that would compel all households in the municipality to own toilets as well as abolish pan-latrines.
He said the pan-latrine is not only outmoded and a nuisance but the mode of handling, storage and transportation was dehumanizing as well.
He said improper disposal of liquid waste could cause disease outbreaks with its attendance socio-economic problems, when water sources are polluted.
