The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned food vendors on school premises to desist from selling certain types of candies (toffees) to pupils.
The warning was in reaction to a letter to the GES from management of Food and Drugs Board (FDB) that "certain business entities are distributing for retail purposes various food items, especially candies that have not been registered with the board".
It said these candies looked like cigarettes, guns, torches with real bulbs and daggers had the potential to promote social vices among the children.
In a circular signed by Madam Benedicta Naana Biney, Deputy Director General of GES to Directors of Education throughout the country, it asked them to educate the school children on the dangers of patronizing such products.
It asked Circuit Supervisors, Co-ordinators of School Health Education Programme (SHEP) and other officers to educate and monitor the health situation in schools.
The FDB noted that, available hospital reports indicated that most children had suffered various degrees of injuries resulting from patronizing those candies.
