His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Most Reverend Philip Naameh, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, a statement in Accra said.
Until his appointment, Archbishop Naameh was the Bishop of Damongo, according to the statement from the Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana signed by Archbishop Leon B. Kalennga, Apostolic Nuncio.
The statement said he succeeds the Most Rev. Gregory Eboh Kpiebaya who has retired having been in that office since 1994.
Most Rev. Philip Naameh who is also the current President of the Episcopal Commission for Education was born on September 8 1948 at Nandom-Ko in the Diocese of Wa.
After St. Charles Minor Seminary, he studied Philosophy and Theology in St. Victor's Regional Seminary at Tamale. As a priest, he studied at "Westfaelische: - Wilhems University of Munich in Germany and in the University of London, where he graduated with a PhD in Church History.
Although he is originally from Wa, he was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Tamale. He was ordained a priest on December 16 1977 in Our Lady of Nativity Church, Ko. He thus became the first indigenous priest in the Archdiocese of Tamale.
During 1978-1981 he was Curate at Cathedral at Tamale, where he was also the Vocations Director and Chaplain of Lay Apostolate.
He then went for studies from 1981-1986 in Germany and London from where he became the Vice Rector and Lecturer in Church History at St. Victor's Regional Seminary, Tamale from 1986-1992.
On February 3, 1995, he was appointed Bishop of the new Diocese of Damongo, followed by the Episcopal consecration on May 28 1995.
