The Nima Cluster branch Zoom Kids Club, in collaboration with Life Bridge 68 Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on Saturday organized a cleanup in some parts of Nima in the Greater Accra Region to rid the area of filth.
Participants, mostly school children cleaned school compounds, desilted gutters, and swept the streets with gloves, nose shields and other equipment supplied by Zoomlion.
Mrs Juliana Arhin, Chief Executive of the NGO, said the club, a brain child of Zoom Ghana Limited, was initially formed in three selected schools in the region to assist children to become "ambassadors of good sanitation and clean environment", adding that this would be replicated in schools nation wide.
She said the NGO helped in initiating the programme under the theme "Keep Ghana Clean: Catch them Young", and this was started at Sakumono 1 and 2 Junior High Schools, Kokomlemle and Nima Cluster of schools.
Mrs. Arhin said those schools were chosen because most of the children came from deprived densely populated communities, which were often engulfed in fifth and there was the need to make them conscious of good sanitation practices.
She stressed the need to inculcate in children the habit of good environmental activities to enable them to appreciate proper waste management practices.
Mrs. Arhin said it was one of the effective ways of curbing the problem of waste management in the country.
She said the programme to train the children to appreciate good environmental practices would include poems, quizzes and essay writings.
